HIV/AIDS vs. THE WORLD
With around 2 million people dying every year, AIDS is considered one of the deadliest diseases. HIV/AIDS is a blood disease that it is caused by sexual contact or blood interactions.. Many people get infected every single day, and there is still no cure for HIV/AIDS. If people do not act now, this disease will continue to spread all over and will end disastrous.
AIDS is a disease of the immune system and if it enters your blood stream, it is deadly. The word AIDS stands for Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the early stages of AIDS. It is estimated that AIDS began spreading in the US around the 1970’s. By the 1980’s, AIDS was commonly seen with gay men. Many people believed at first that gay men were the ones that started this disease. The government even promoted safe sex to gay men thinking that this could prevent the disease.
AZT was the first drug was approved for AIDS testing in 1987. Later in 1993, the drug AZT was shown not to give any benefits for those in early stages of HIV. In 1996, there was a break through in medicine; combination antiretroviral treatment was shown to be highly effective against HIV. Even though this new drug suppressed HIV, there was still no cure, and many people died every day. In 1990, about 8 million people were living with HIV. Twenty years later, there are about 33 million people living with AIDS. This number has changed dramatically in a negative way.
Worldwide there are around 33.3 million people living with HIV/AIDS. Of that number about 70% comes Africa. The continent of Africa was affected the worst with this epidemic. Although there are effective treatments for HIV, many people in Africa and other third world countries are unable to afford these treatments. This makes AIDS one of the deadliest diseases. An average of 2 million people a year are dying from AIDS. Although this disease can be contracted by anyone over half of the patients are African American. Additionally the average age of those with the disease are between 20-40 years old. There are many teens under the age of 15 has dramatically decreased.
Today more people need to learn how important preventing AIDS is. We need to educate teens about sexual contact so they don’t contract or spread the disease. Informing drug users of the dangers of sharing needles can also help. Also we need to give money, where it is needed most, in Africa, to help stop AIDS.
Thankfully, there are many people and organizations out to help people with AIDS. One great organization is AIDS help. Their website informs people about AIDS, how to donate money, and has ways for people to get involved. There are also many marathons and walks to participate in that donate money for AIDS research. Finally, people can help by just getting involved, whether its helping students become educated, or donating money. We need to find a cure and spread word about safe sex. It is important keep our body’s healthy. Colin Powell stated, "No war on the face of the Earth is more destructive than the AIDS pandemic." AIDS is a war that we need to cure!
